Suar Bahri Kultura Foundation

Advancing Bahari Cultures

Suar Bahri Kultura (in short Subak) is a not-for-profit organization, incorporated in Indonesia as a yayasan.

Subak has the mission to develop a network of Bahari Cultural Centers in Indonesia and link them with counterparts around the world to advance the Bahari Culture globally.

Our Vision

Consolidating sources of bahari culture knowledge to enhance Bahari Ocean Literacy by 2025.

Establishing  the first Bahari Cultural Center in 2030.

Becoming the partner of choice for Indonesian provinces to advance local Bahari Cultures in 2045.

Our Fields

Bahari Literacy

Indonesians have interacted with the sea for ages and developed unique Bahari Cultures that inform both attitude and engagement with the Ocean. Therefore, Indonesian Ocean Literacy should really be Bahari Literacy. Subak is now digitalizing the library of the late Prof. A. B. Lapian, “Captain of Southeast Asian Maritime Historians”

Bahari Technology

Ships and shipping have united Nusantara, the largest archipelago of the world, for ages. Yet, due to modernization, shipbuilding and seafaring traditions now need revitalization. Subak is now revitalizing traditional shipbuilding in Muarajambi, the inhabited 4,000 Ha, 8-13 Century temple complex in Sumatra.

Bahari Policy

The sectoral approach towards maritime development has compartmentalized local Bahari Cultural Ecosystems in Indonesia; they now need “culturally-correct” national development policies. Subak is involved in the Nusantara Ocean Week forum, led by the National Development Planning Agency of Indonesia.
